Liberian Community in Rwanda Engages with Rwandan National Police through the Offices of the Department of Community Policing to Strengthen Security and Community Relations
Kigali, Rwanda, November 4, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move to enhance security and foster collaboration, the Liberian Community in Rwanda held a high-level meeting with the Community Policing Department of the Rwandan National Police. This engagement stemmed from recent discussions between the Inspectors General of Police from both Liberia and Rwanda after Liberians residing in Rwanda raised concerns regarding their safety and security during his visit to Rwanda.
The Liberian delegation, comprising Chairman Emmanuel Patrick, Vice Chairperson for International Affairs (VCIA) Oretha K. Saye, and Mr. Leo Vaca Posiah, met with key officials from the Rwandan National Police. The meeting, aimed at addressing security challenges faced by Liberians and other international residents in Rwanda, was structured to establish a closer relationship between the police and the community. It also sought to lay the groundwork for future community policing initiatives, recognizing the importance of joint efforts in creating a secure environment for all.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Liberian Community emphasized the need for educational seminars led by law enforcement agencies. These sessions would provide valuable information to community members, helping them understand local laws and regulations, while promoting safety practices.
The Commissioner in charge of Community Policing welcomed the Liberian delegation and reaffirmed the Rwandan National Police’s commitment to building strong bonds with all communities residing in Rwanda. She underscored the role of community policing in creating a safe environment for both residents and visitors. “Security is a shared responsibility,” the Commissioner noted. “We all have a role to play in keeping our neighborhoods safe. By working together, we can ensure that everyone remains vigilant and conscious of their surroundings, creating a safer society for all.”
Key topics discussed included strategies to increase awareness of local laws, protocols for reporting incidents, and ways to foster trust and cooperation between community members and police officers. The Liberian delegation also raised concerns specific to their members, such as safety in neighborhoods with a higher density of criminal activity and the importance of clear channels for communication in case of emergencies.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to collaborate on initiatives that address security concerns and facilitate an open channel of communication between the Liberian Community and the Rwandan National Police.
“This meeting marks the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation,” said the Chairman of the Liberian Community. “We look forward to working closely with the Rwandan National Police to build a safer and more connected community for all.”
This proactive approach underscores the commitment of the Liberian Community in Rwanda to integrate seamlessly while contributing to the security and welfare of both the Liberian diaspora and the broader Rwandan society.
